A Real Work of Art!

Marcon have now completed the bespoke fit-out of a former bank and school building near Auckland Castle in County Durham to create a new Spanish art gallery.

The Spanish Gallery, part of the Auckland Project is the first museum in the UK dedicated to Spanish art, putting into context the Zurbarán paintings displayed in Auckland Castle.

The Spanish Gallery is split into 15 exhibition areas spread over three floors, creating almost 6,000 sq ft of exhibition space.

It displays artworks from the medieval period onwards, with particular emphasis on the 16th and 17th century Spanish Golden Age. As the Spanish empire expanded across five continents, the fine arts, literature, and music flourished in the Iberian Peninsula and is one of the glories of art throughout the world.

Designed by Studio MB, the new gallery will take visitors on a journey through the history of Spanish art while examining its impact on modern culture.  The building includes a dramatic top-lit double-height space for a breath taking and immersive experience.

Marcon were responsible for the manufacture and installation of custom-made joinery works and specialist fit out elements ranging from CNC engraved valchromat panels, suspended voile drapes and decorative wall panelling to translucent Corian Onyx back-lit plinths, curved metal work and infinity mirrors.

Lorcan Hegarty, Project Manager at Marcon, commented: “This has been a really exciting and creative project.  The designs for this were very impressive and we are proud to have been able to bring Studio MBs vision to life.  It really showcases the skills of our talented team and quality of our workmanship”.

The new gallery opened to the public 15th October 2021.
