On the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, the Calanais Standing Stones have overlooked the surrounding landscape for around 5,000 years. The Calanais Standing Stones are an extraordinary cross-shaped setting of stones that predate England’s famous Stonehenge monument, and were an important place for ritual activity for at least 2,000 years. Recognised as one of Scotland’s most important prehistoric monuments, they continue to attract visitors from across the world.
As part of the redevelopment of the Calanais Visitor Centre, Marcon delivered the exhibition fit-out, signage and graphics package, helping create a visitor experience that reflects the significance of the site. Working closely with the wider project team, we manufactured and installed bespoke exhibition joinery, interpretive graphics, display features and internal and external signage throughout the building.
The project involved the integration of a wide range of audio-visual and interactive elements. Displays were carefully coordinated around monitors, projectors, speakers, sensors and lighting, while access panels were incorporated to allow ongoing maintenance without affecting the exhibition environment.
Delivering the works on an island location brought its own challenges. Materials and specialist components had to be carefully scheduled around ferry crossings, site access and changing weather conditions. Matthew Hendren, Project Manager at Marcon commented, “Close collaboration with Urras nan Tursachan, Bright 3D, Lewis Builders and the wider design team helped keep the programme moving and ensured every element came together as intended.”
External signage and fixing systems were selected to suit the exposed Hebridean climate, while the principal stone entrance sign required detailed coordination through design development, fabrication and installation.
The completed exhibition provides visitors with an introduction to the history and significance of the Calanais Standing Stones, combining traditional craftsmanship, interpretation and technology in a way that feels appropriate to this remarkable place.
